On-Site Technical Consultation for Metal Scrap Recycling in Dubai

Metal machining operations generate substantial quantities of steel turnings, stainless steel chips, and metal offcuts. When these materials are collected in loose piles or outdoor containers, they can occupy valuable floor space, complicate material handling, and increase the volume of scrap transported for recycling.

In October 2026, ENERPAT visited a heavy machining facility in Dubai, UAE, to evaluate a suitable Lid-Style Metal Block Baler for its metal scrap management requirements.

The consultation focused on three main material streams: carbon steel turnings, stainless steel turnings, and stainless steel scrap. The customer was looking for a compact hydraulic metal baling machine that could reduce loose scrap volume, produce manageable metal blocks, and fit into the existing workshop layout.

Rather than recommending a large automated recycling line, ENERPAT focused on evaluating a practical solution based on the customer's material characteristics, target block weight, daily processing requirements, and available installation space.

On-Site Technical Consultation for Metal Scrap Recycling in Dubai

Metal Scrap Handling Challenges at the Dubai Facility

The facility generates metal waste through routine machining operations. Before the consultation, collected scrap was placed in outdoor containers without a dedicated metal scrap compaction system.

This handling method created several operational challenges.

Limited storage space

Loose metal turnings have a relatively low bulk density and can occupy considerable space. Their irregular shapes also make efficient stacking difficult, limiting the use of available storage areas.

Inefficient scrap transportation

Transporting loose metal turnings means moving a substantial volume of material. Compacting suitable scrap into metal blocks could improve storage organization and make subsequent handling and transportation more efficient.

Oily machining waste

Some metal turnings may contain residual cutting oil or coolant. This needs to be considered when selecting metal recycling equipment and establishing safe material handling procedures.

Restricted installation space

The facility has limited room for additional machinery. Its existing conveyor system is approximately 70 metres long, and the layout does not allow the conveyor to make a turn. Equipment placement and material transfer therefore require careful consideration.

Simple operation and manageable block weight

The customer prefers a straightforward process that can be operated by one worker. The target metal block weight is approximately 15 kg, allowing the finished blocks to be handled individually and arranged on pallets.

These requirements established the main criteria for evaluating a suitable Lid-Style Automatic Scrap Metal Baler.

Metal Materials Evaluated During the Consultation

Choosing a metal baling machine requires more than identifying the type of metal being processed. Material length, shape, density, oil content, and feeding characteristics can all affect the compaction process.

During the Dubai visit, ENERPAT reviewed three categories of machining scrap.

1. Carbon Steel Turnings

Carbon steel turnings are the primary material requiring processing.

The customer reported that the turnings are approximately 1–2 mm thick and 500–1,000 mm long, although their dimensions vary depending on machining conditions.

Long steel turnings can become tangled and difficult to handle. Their length and shape may also affect feeding into a hydraulic scrap metal baler.

Before finalizing the equipment configuration, ENERPAT needs to assess whether the material can be loaded directly or requires preliminary size reduction. Representative samples would help determine the most suitable handling and compaction method.

2. Stainless Steel Scrap

The second material stream consists of irregular, block-shaped or fragmented stainless steel scrap generated during machining.

This material differs from long metal turnings in shape and loading characteristics. Its dimensions and physical properties need to be considered when evaluating compression performance and finished-block discharge.

The selected Lid-Style Metal Block Baler must therefore be assessed against the actual stainless steel scrap rather than relying on nominal machine capacity alone.

3. Stainless Steel Turnings

The facility also produces stainless steel turnings approximately 100 mm long.

Although these turnings are shorter than the carbon steel material, their bulk density, shape, and residual cutting fluid can still influence feeding and compaction.

Evaluating all three material streams is important in determining whether one Metal Block Baler can handle the customer's different scrap types or whether separate processing arrangements would be more appropriate.

Evaluating the ENERPAT Lid-Style Metal Block Baler

Based on the customer's requirements, ENERPAT introduced the AMB-L1270-125 Hydraulic Scrap Baling Press for Scrap Metals as a candidate for further technical evaluation.

A Lid-Style Metal Block Baler uses a hydraulic compression mechanism and a lid-style chamber to compact suitable scrap metal into rectangular blocks. Compared with loose scrap, compacted blocks can be easier to arrange, store, and transfer, depending on their dimensions and weight.

For this project, equipment selection centers on four key considerations.

Target Metal Block Weight: Approximately 15 kg

The customer requires finished metal blocks weighing approximately 15 kg so that one operator can handle them individually.

This is an important selection criterion. The target weight must be evaluated alongside block dimensions, material density, compression performance, and the machine's discharge method.

A standard block size does not automatically guarantee a particular finished weight, especially when processing long steel turnings or mixed metal scrap.

ENERPAT therefore needs to confirm whether the AMB-L1270-125 can consistently achieve the required block weight with the customer's materials. Material testing and a review of the proposed operating process are recommended before the final equipment configuration is approved.

Processing Capacity: Approximately 1 Tonne per Hour

The facility estimates that it generates approximately 7 tonnes of metal scrap per day.

Because scrap is collected over time, the customer expects to operate the equipment only one or two days per week, with a working shift of approximately nine hours.

The resulting processing requirement is around 0.9–1 tonne per hour.

This provides a practical reference for selecting a hydraulic metal baler. However, actual throughput depends on the material being processed, loading frequency, compression cycle, block weight, and operator workflow.

The published capacity of a metal baling machine should not be treated as a guaranteed output for long carbon steel turnings or mixed stainless steel scrap without verification.

Compact Layout and Simple Operation

The customer does not require an unnecessarily complex automated metal recycling line. The immediate objective is to reduce loose scrap volume using equipment that fits the existing facility.

The proposed approach is to assess a standalone Lid-Style Metal Block Baler and determine whether it can be integrated into the current collection and handling process.

The final layout must provide adequate space for material loading, safe machine operation, block discharge, and pallet handling.

Palletized Blocks and Material Transfer

The customer intends to place the finished metal blocks on pallets and move them away once the pallets are full.

A suitable discharge arrangement and material handling process are therefore important parts of the equipment assessment.

ENERPAT also discussed a bale handling trolley concept, using operating video to illustrate how compacted blocks could be transferred after discharge.

The final handling arrangement will depend on the confirmed block dimensions and weight, discharge height, pallet positioning, and available floor space.

Lid-Style Metal Block Baler

Lid-Style Metal Block Baler vs. Metal Chip Briquetting Machine

When evaluating metal scrap recycling equipment, it is important to distinguish between a Lid-Style Metal Block Baler and a Metal Chip Briquetting Machine.

A Lid-Style Metal Block Baler compresses suitable metal scrap into rectangular blocks. It is commonly considered when the main objective is to reduce the volume of scrap metal and simplify storage, stacking, and transportation.

A Metal Chip Briquetting Machine, also known as a metal chip briquetter or metal briquetting press, is designed to compress suitable loose metal chips and turnings into denser briquettes, often cylindrical in shape. Depending on the machine design, the process may also support the recovery of cutting oil or coolant.

These machines serve related but different applications. A metal block baler should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a dedicated metal chip briquetting machine.

For the Dubai project, the Lid-Style Metal Block Baler remains the primary candidate because the consultation is focused on producing manageable blocks and improving scrap handling.

However, the customer's long carbon steel turnings, mixed material streams, and approximately 15 kg block-weight requirement must be verified before the equipment selection is finalized.

If testing indicates that a dedicated metal chip briquetting machine would better suit the material characteristics or operational objectives, that option can be evaluated separately.

The priority is to identify the process that meets the customer's actual requirements rather than selecting equipment based solely on nominal hydraulic force or advertised throughput.

Planning the Metal Scrap Handling Workflow

The consultation also covered how the proposed equipment could fit into the existing workshop.

The facility currently collects loose metal scrap in containers outside the workshop. Its existing conveyor system is approximately 70 metres long, and the layout cannot accommodate a change of direction.

This makes the machine footprint, loading arrangement, and finished-block discharge particularly important.

The potential workflow includes:

  1. Collect carbon steel turnings, stainless steel turnings, and stainless steel scrap from machining operations.

  2. Transfer suitable material to the Lid-Style Metal Block Baler.

  3. Compact the material into manageable metal blocks, subject to confirmation of the target weight and material compatibility.

  4. Discharge the finished blocks and arrange them on pallets.

  5. Move loaded pallets to the designated collection area using suitable material handling equipment.

This approach aims to improve metal scrap storage and internal transportation without introducing unnecessary changes to the existing conveyor layout.

The final configuration will depend on material testing, equipment dimensions, feeding requirements, and the available installation space.

ENERPAT Pre-Sales Technical Support

During the visit, ENERPAT introduced its experience in metal recycling equipment manufacturing and shared international equipment references to help the customer evaluate the proposed solution.

Examples of long-term equipment operation and subsequent after-sales technical support were also discussed. These references demonstrated the importance of equipment reliability, practical maintenance support, and access to technical assistance throughout the machine's service life.

The next steps for the Dubai project include:

  • Confirming the technical suitability of the AMB-L1270-125 Lid-Style Metal Block Baler.

  • Assessing the three metal scrap streams and the target block weight.

  • Reviewing the estimated throughput and operating schedule.

  • Providing product information and equipment operating videos.

  • Evaluating the machine footprint, loading method, and finished-block handling process.

  • Continuing technical discussions and considering a visit to ENERPAT's manufacturing facility.

The project was in the final technical review stage at the time of the consultation. However, the customer's internal procurement and financial approval process meant that implementation was being considered for 2027, subject to approval and confirmation of the equipment configuration.

A Practical Metal Scrap Recycling Solution for Machining Facilities

For heavy machining facilities, effective metal scrap management starts with understanding the materials being generated and the way they are collected, stored, and transported.

A suitable Lid-Style Metal Block Baler can help reduce loose scrap volume and improve handling efficiency when the material and operating requirements match the machine's capabilities.

For this Dubai application, the key priorities are clear: accommodate the customer's metal turnings and stainless steel scrap, evaluate the target 15 kg block weight, achieve the required processing rate, and fit the equipment into a space-constrained workshop.

ENERPAT's pre-sales technical consultation focuses on these practical considerations before a final equipment configuration is confirmed.

Whether a facility is evaluating a Lid-Style Metal Block Baler, a Hydraulic Scrap Metal Baler, a Metal Chip Briquetting Machine, or a more integrated metal scrap recycling system, the right choice depends on the material characteristics and the intended production workflow.
