Project Overview

During an on-site technical consultation in Dubai, UAE, ENERPAT assessed a metal chip recycling project for a precision machining operation serving the oil and gas industry.

The facility generates metal chips and turnings from large machine tools across three production lines. Much of the material retains valuable cutting oil after collection, but the existing handling process does not recover the oil for reuse. Instead, the oily metal scrap is loaded into bulk bags and sold without further processing.

The primary objective is to recover cutting oil, filter it and return it to the machine tools. A secondary objective is to compress the recovered metal chips into dense briquettes, reducing storage volume and simplifying scrap handling.

ENERPAT's on-site consultation focused on evaluating the material, production layout, equipment height restrictions and potential configurations for an integrated metal chip briquetting and cutting oil recovery solution.

1. Current Challenges in Metal Chip Recycling

Cutting Oil Loss During Chip Collection

The facility currently collects metal chips through hoppers and existing collection equipment. However, a significant amount of cutting oil remains in the collected material.

The oily chips are manually transferred into bulk bags and sold as scrap without dedicated de-oiling, oil filtration or recovery.

For a machining operation that uses expensive cutting oil, this represents an opportunity to recover reusable fluid while improving the handling of metalworking waste.

ENERPAT evaluated a potential process combining metal chip de-oiling, cutting oil filtration and fluid return pumping. The objective is to collect recovered oil, remove contaminants as required and return suitable fluid to the relevant machine tools.

Loose Metal Chips Take Up Storage Space

The customer also wants to compress loose metal chips before selling them to scrap metal recyclers.

A hydraulic metal chip briquetting machine can compress suitable machining chips into dense, compact briquettes. Compared with loose turnings, briquettes are easier to store, handle and transport.

For this application, however, volume reduction is only part of the requirement. Cutting oil recovery must remain the primary consideration when selecting the equipment and configuring the processing line.

Three Production Lines Require Practical Material Handling

The facility has three production lines that generate metal chips simultaneously. Collecting material from all three lines at a single centralized processing point could introduce additional handling and transportation work.

ENERPAT discussed two potential configurations:

  • Three-machine configuration: A dedicated metal chip briquetting and oil recovery unit for each production line, reducing the need to transport wet chips between production areas.

  • Shared processing configuration: A common processing unit serving multiple lines, subject to a detailed assessment of collection logistics, operating schedules and throughput.

The final configuration will depend on confirmed material volumes, available floor space, oil recovery requirements and the customer's preferred collection method.

2. Metal Chip Material Assessment

During the site visit, ENERPAT reviewed the available material and discussed the characteristics that could affect equipment selection.

The collected material consists primarily of metal machining chips and turnings. Most pieces are approximately 50–100 mm long, although occasional stringy turnings may reach 1–2 metres.

Long metal turnings are an important consideration when selecting a Metal Chip Briquetting Press or Industrial Metal Chip Wringer Centrifuge. Depending on their length, shape and tendency to tangle, they may require preliminary size reduction before entering downstream equipment.

The proportion of long turnings was not established during the visit and must be confirmed before the final configuration is selected.

The team also identified the following technical requirements:

  • Cutting oil recovery: Recover suitable cutting fluid from wet metal chips for filtration and reuse.

  • Metal chip compaction: Reduce loose scrap volume and simplify storage and transportation.

  • Equipment height: Target an overall equipment height of approximately 1.5–2 metres, with a maximum preferred height of 2 metres.

  • Production layout: Accommodate three active machining lines and minimize unnecessary material handling.

  • Operating capacity: Confirm the hourly material generation rate and daily operating hours to size the equipment appropriately.

These factors will guide the selection of a metal chip briquetting machine, chip de-oiling equipment and the associated oil collection and filtration components.

3. Proposed ENERPAT Metal Chip Recycling Solution

Based on the initial consultation, ENERPAT will evaluate an integrated Metal Chips Recycling System designed around cutting oil recovery, metal chip compaction and practical workshop operation.

Metal Chip Briquetting Machine

A hydraulic metal chip briquetting machine compresses suitable metal chips and turnings into dense briquettes. During compression, cutting oil can be separated from the solid material and collected for further treatment.

For this project, the equipment must be assessed against the actual chip dimensions, material characteristics, hourly throughput and installation height.

ENERPAT will also evaluate whether preliminary chip processing is necessary for the occasional long turnings reported by the customer.

Metal Chip Briquetting Machine

Metal Chip De-Oiling Machine

A Metal Chip Spinner, also known as a chip wringer or centrifugal chip de-oiling machine, separates cutting fluid from metal chips using centrifugal force.

This type of equipment may be suitable when fluid recovery and chip drying are the main objectives. The final choice between centrifugal de-oiling and hydraulic briquetting will depend on the required briquette output, chip geometry, processing capacity and desired fluid recovery performance.

Where appropriate, the two technologies can be evaluated as alternative or complementary stages rather than assuming that every application requires both.

Cutting Oil Filtration and Recovery System

Recovering oil from metal chips is only the first step. The collected fluid must also meet the cleanliness requirements of the intended reuse application.

The proposed cutting oil recovery system will therefore be evaluated for compatibility with the customer's cutting fluid, including the need for a suitable filtration unit, collection tank and return pump.

The intended process is:

Metal Chip Collection → Oil Separation → Oil Collection and Filtration → Return Pumping → Machine Tool Reuse

The filtration configuration and achievable oil recovery rate must be determined from the actual cutting fluid, contamination level and operating conditions. Recovered oil should only be returned to the machine tools when it meets the relevant process requirements.

Chip Collection Hopper and Tipping Hopper

The customer also expressed interest in a small metal chip briquetting machine equipped with a tipping hopper to simplify the collection and loading of machining scrap.

ENERPAT will assess the appropriate hopper design, loading method and equipment arrangement for the three production lines.

A tipping hopper or dedicated chip collection hopper can help organize material feeding, but its dimensions and discharge arrangement must match the selected machine and the available installation space.

The site layout and equipment mobility requirements also need to be clarified. In particular, the final design must establish whether the customer requires three fixed processing units or a shared unit that can serve multiple production lines.

4. On-Site Technical Consultation and Next Steps

During the visit, ENERPAT reviewed the existing chip collection process, discussed the customer's oil recovery objectives and assessed the available installation space.

The consultation established the main technical considerations for the project: oil recovery performance, metal chip geometry, production throughput, equipment height and the relationship between the three production lines.

Further technical confirmation is required before ENERPAT can finalize the equipment selection and provide a detailed proposal.

The next steps include:

  • Confirming the proportion of long metal turnings and whether pre-shredding or chip crushing is required.

  • Establishing the hourly and daily metal chip generation rate for each production line.

  • Confirming daily operating hours and the required processing capacity.

  • Identifying the cutting oil type, contamination level and filtration requirements for reuse.

  • Finalizing the preferred equipment arrangement, hopper design and installation dimensions.

  • Evaluating the appropriate combination of metal chip briquetting, chip de-oiling, oil filtration and return pumping equipment.

  • Arranging a follow-up technical meeting to review the proposed configuration and quotation.

Once these details are available, ENERPAT can develop a solution tailored to the facility's operating conditions rather than relying on standard equipment assumptions.

5. ENERPAT Support for Metal Chip Recycling Projects
