Project Overview

On October 19, 2026, ENERPAT visited a large-scale layer farm in the Umm Slal area of Qatar for an on-site technical consultation on wood waste processing and poultry manure composting.

The farm operates three egg production lines and is planning to expand to four. With approximately 100,000 laying hens and an estimated 5–6 tons of poultry manure generated daily, the operation is exploring ways to reuse waste wood and organic residues as part of its resource recovery strategy.

The main objective was to assess a suitable wood waste shredding system that could process bulky timber offcuts, remove metal contaminants, and prepare fine wood material for mixing with poultry manure during composting.

Wood Waste Processing Requirements

The farm generates waste wood from its operations and wants to reuse the processed material for soil improvement and compost production. Some incoming timber can reach 3 meters in length, requiring a robust size-reduction solution.

The key requirements discussed during the visit included:

  • Initial processing capacity: Approximately 3–5 tons per hour, with potential expansion to 5–10 tons per hour.

  • Fine wood output: Reduce waste wood to a smaller, more consistent size suitable for the intended composting process.

  • Nail removal: Integrate magnetic separation to remove ferrous contaminants from the wood stream.

  • Reduced labor requirements: Prioritize automated feeding, conveying, discharge, and material handling.

  • Future expansion: Allow the processing line to accommodate increased demand as the farm expands.

Given the local labor constraints and high summer temperatures, equipment reliability, ease of operation, and maintenance planning are important considerations for the proposed system.

Proposed Wood Waste Shredding Solution

Following the site inspection and discussions with the customer's representative, ENERPAT reviewed a two-stage wood waste shredding process.

1. Primary Wood Shredder

A heavy-duty primary shredder would handle bulky waste wood and reduce oversized material to a more manageable size before secondary processing. This stage is particularly important when the incoming timber reaches approximately 3 meters in length.

The final machine configuration will depend on the wood dimensions, material composition, feeding method, and required throughput.

2. Single Shaft Shredder for Fine Processing

A single shaft shredder was discussed as the secondary size-reduction machine. After primary shredding, the material would enter the single shaft wood shredder for further processing into smaller wood chips.

The target is to produce wood material suitable for blending with poultry manure during composting. Final particle size and throughput will need to be confirmed through material testing and process evaluation.

For operations comparing a Wood Shavings Machine with an industrial wood waste shredder, the distinction is important: the appropriate equipment depends on the incoming wood format and the required output. Bulky timber offcuts require a size-reduction solution, while dedicated wood shaving equipment is generally selected for producing shaving-type material. The final configuration should match the farm's actual composting requirements.

3. Magnetic Separator for Nail Removal

Waste wood may contain embedded nails and other ferrous metal contaminants. A magnetic separator, potentially installed above the discharge conveyor, can remove liberated ferrous pieces from the processed wood stream.

The separator arrangement should be selected according to the material layer, conveyor width, processing capacity, and amount of metal present. ENERPAT will also review the potential impact of nail-contaminated feedstock on cutting components and wear parts before finalizing the equipment specification.

4. Automated Conveying and Material Collection

To minimize manual handling, the proposed system can incorporate:

  • Infeed and discharge conveyors

  • A magnetic separation section

  • A collection hopper or storage bin

  • A discharge arrangement suitable for tractor or truck loading

The final layout will depend on site conditions, equipment positioning, and the required material flow. These components can be coordinated as part of an integrated wood waste processing line rather than operated as separate machines.

Supporting Poultry Manure Composting

The processed wood material is intended to be mixed with poultry manure to support the farm's composting and soil improvement program.

With approximately 5–6 tons of poultry manure generated each day, the farm is assessing how wood processing can support a more organized organic waste management process. The farm also reuses other organic residues, including grass clippings, as part of its broader resource recovery practices.

Wood particle size, moisture content, carbon-to-nitrogen balance, and aeration all influence composting performance. Therefore, the shredding line should be designed around the downstream composting requirements, not simply the maximum capacity of an individual machine.

ENERPAT's next step is to review the proposed material flow and equipment configuration against the farm's actual feedstock and intended composting method.

On-Site Consultation and Project Follow-Up

During the visit, ENERPAT reviewed the farm's existing egg production operations, including the poultry housing, egg collection, grading, and in-house egg packing line.

Because the farm already has an established egg handling and packaging system, the current project focuses on the upstream wood waste processing and organic waste utilization stages rather than additional egg packing equipment.

The customer and local representative expressed interest in further cooperation, including the possibility of using the project as a reference installation for other poultry farms in the region.

The agreed follow-up priorities include:

  • Reviewing the effect of nails and metal contamination on shredder knives and other wear components.

  • Preparing a preliminary process flow and equipment proposal.

  • Evaluating the initial 3–5 tons-per-hour requirement and potential expansion to 5–10 tons per hour.

  • Clarifying maintenance intervals, wear-part replacement considerations, and after-sales support requirements.

  • Assessing opportunities for a future factory visit and equipment inspection.

ENERPAT Wood Waste Processing Solutions

ENERPAT provides industrial shredding and recycling equipment for businesses seeking to improve waste handling and material recovery. For projects involving wood waste, a suitable system may combine primary size reduction, a single shaft shredder, magnetic separation, conveyors, and automated material collection.

For poultry farms and agricultural operations, the right configuration depends on the type and dimensions of the wood waste, contamination levels, target particle size, required capacity, and downstream application.

ENERPAT can work with customers to evaluate these factors and develop a practical equipment proposal for wood waste processing and related organic waste management projects.
